In 2009, when registering a 3-4-year old Euro 3 car, with a 1,500 cc engine and a 250g CO2/km emission norm, the owner paid RON7,510. As of January 1, 2010, the tax for the same car is RON8,580.
Each year, the foreign exchange rate set on October 1 by the European Central Bank is the rate at which excises, the emission tax and duty on oil from internal production are to be paid.
As of January 1, 2010, owners of cars with Euro 4-compliant engines also pay the emission tax, from which they were so far exempt.
