"Mr. Popescu addressed our institution legally and formally and asked to be checked. We took the legal path and (…) we established in the meeting on Tuesday that Mr. Popescu did not collaborate with the Securitate (communist era political police - e.n.). His certificate will be drafted and sent to him, will be posted on the website and can be contested within the legal term, as it was with all other cases our institution has analyzed," the sources said.

On Monday, June 29, 2009,  Romanian daily Adevarul reported that Popescu informed the communist police about his fellow footballers in 1986-1989.

Popescu immediately and repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.
