Romanian Ex Pres Suggests Left-Right Tag Team Vs Current President
Iliescu said, in an interview published Monday by Romanian daily "Adevarul," that there are two political opponents facing the Social Democratic Party (PSD), namely the liberals and president Basescu, but while the National Liberal Party (PNL) has a well defined “shape”, Basescu and his supporters do not have "any shape or beliefs."
Iliescu said that the current president "has no scruples, has nothing", "he is motherless, fatherless and godless," which makes him "the most dangerous" of opponents.
"The only rational approach would be finding some minimal common ground of understanding with the liberals, therefore, as a party, a collaboration frame between the Parliament and the Government, which might put Basescu and the negative effects of his actions in isolation," said Iliescu.
"The arch enemy of stability in Romania is Basescu and his supporters, and we need to find a way and a platform, a way to defend democracy in Romania first and foremost and to find a way for stability in the political life of the country. As for PSD, there is need for a clearer stance and more fertile dialogue," the former president of Romania concluded.
Iliescu also stated that he is not speaking with the current head of state, since Basescu is not familiar with the practice of civilized dialogue and has a “somewhat primitive” mentality garnished with authoritarian and dictator-like tendencies.
