Basescu also said Romania plans to get the European Council to undertake to draft a strategy for the Danube.
The head of state said he would attend, alongside Prime Minister Emil Boc, the works of the European Summer Council in Brussels, stressing the main issues on the agenda target the economic, financial and social situation at European Union level, climate changes and durable development, institutional issues, illegal immigration and EU’s external problems, particularly the relations with Afghanistan and Pakistan.
"As regards climate changes and durable development, we plan to get the commitment of the European Council to draft a wide strategy for the Danube," Basescu said.
Basescu added talks would also focus on measures targeting the economic revival and global cooperation in view of reforming the financial system.
"Romania will take a firm stand in supporting the need for improved regulation and closer monitoring of the banking system," Basescu said.
He also stressed talks would also focus on the impact of measures meant to soften the effects of the economic crisis on workforce.
Furthermore, he said talks would also target the implementation of the Lisbon Treaty, as well as solutions for Ireland to ratify this document through referendum.
Basescu pointed out the first official discussions on the setting up of the future European Commission would be also held at the European Summer Council, which marks the end of the Czech EU presidency.
Basescu and Boc will also attend Thursday in Brussels the summit of the European People’s Party, which will take place before the European Council reunion of presidents and prime ministers of EU member states.
