The diplomat will be suspended throughout the criminal investigation starting Thursday.
Romania's General Prosecutors' Office said in a press release Wednesday criminal prosecutors started on February 2 the criminal investigation of Ionescu charged with negligent homicide, fleeing the scene of the accident and false statements.
On December 15, 2009, a car belonging to the Romanian embassy hit three pedestrians in Bukit Panjang. One of the victims, 30 year-old Tong Kok Wai, died ten days later, while the other two were injured. The Romanian diplomat, who is thought to have been driving the car, initially reported the car stolen and denied any wrongdoing.
