Romanian Football, Not Good Enough For Intertoto, Let Along Champions League-Official

Dumitru Dragomir, the head of Romania’s Professional Football League, or LPF, on Thursday expressed his disappointment in the evolution of Romanian football, saying Romanian footballers are not skilled enough to play in the Intertoto Cup, let along the Champions League.

 “We are not good enough for UEFA Cup either, so you can ease up. When there is no money, there is no room for performance. What happened in the last two years with Rapid and Steaua in UEFA was pure hazard, and it only happened because they did not transferred players abroad. My belief is we are not even good enough for Intertoto. We did not win the Intertoto Cup, and this is the truth. We qualified, but we did not win the trophy. In order to have higher aspirations, we must invest in our clubs,” Dragomir said.
He said he did not feel sorry for Steaua’s defeat against FC Sevilla, score 0-2, in the Champions League Group H on Wednesday. However, he said there is no shame in ranking at the bottom of the group, as there is a huge difference between the value of Steaua’s players and the ones of FC Sevilla.
Steaua blew its chances to make it into the last 16 in Champions League after Wednesday evening’s match against Seville. However, Steaua could still make it into the last 32 for UEFA Cup.
