Mutu, striker for Italian team Fiorentina, ranked 300 in Top 300 Capital in 2007, a ranking of the 300 richest Romanians, with an estimated fortune of EUR12-13 million. In 2008, Mutu was no longer included in the ranking and his fortune was estimated at EUR10 million.
Mutu, who is married and has three children, has invested his money in luxury cars (Ferrari, Aston Marin, Bentley), villas in London and Ibiza, a yacht and property in Miami. Many of the businesses he invested in, such as a night club, fashion lines, wines, a reality show, went badly and football remained his main source of income.
In July 2006, Mutu was transferred to Fiorentina from Juventus Torino in a EUR8 million deal. Mutu has a contract with Fiorentina until 2012 and makes EUR2.2 million a year.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport on Friday said it dismissed the appeal filed by Mutu against the decision rendered by FIFA’s Dispute Resolution Chamber of 7 May 2008 obligating Mutu to pay EUR17 million in compensation to Chelsea FC for breach of contract.
"The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has today dismissed the appeal filed by the Romanian football player, Adrian Mutu, against the decision rendered by the FIFA Dispute Resolution Chamber (DRC) on 7 May 2008 in which he was ordered to pay EUR17,173,990 in compensation to his former club, Chelsea FC, for breach of contract," the court said in a statement.
