Timofte was suffering from leukemia. He resigned his position as head of the intelligence service in July 2006, following the escape of Syrian businessman Omar Hayssam, wanted for terrorism in connection with the kidnapping of three Romanian journalists in Iraq in 2005.
Anticorruption prosecutors had indicted Timofte late June along four other former and current employees of the Romanian Intelligence Service SRI on charges of abuse of office and forgery in Timofte's home acquisition.
