"I haven’t decided yet, to be honest. It’s something everybody in the party is thinking about. The Social Democratic Party is a large party, with high ambitions. It’s natural we should have an internal debate. We might even se internal competition, maybe several colleagues will wish to run for president. We’ll think about it and we’ll make a decision at the right time,” Geoana said.
He added that whoever becomes Romania’s next president, the stakes of the social democrat – democrat liberal governing coalition are much higher than getting through the economic crisis.
"The true test for this coalition is not the presidential election campaign. Many people oversimplify things and say that if a social democrat runs against Basescu (acting President Traian Basescu – e.n.), then this coalition won’t work,” Geoana said, adding the goal of the coalition, which has 75% support in Parliament, is to reform Romania.
Sources within the Social Democratic Party told MEDIAFAX Tuesday that party leader Mircea Geoana is considering running for president in the 2009 elections and will make a decision after March 15, when the party expects the results of an opinion poll.
They said Geoana told party leaders he is considering running for president, but hasn’t yet made a decision. They added a national opinion poll has already been ordered and its results are due in the upcoming months.
Several local party leaders in the country’s eastern region of Moldavia urged Geoana to run for president later this year, people close to the matter told MEDIAFAX Sunday. They also said Geoana neither refused their suggestion, nor did he say he would run for president.
According to the same sources, the Social Democratic Party plans to order an opinion poll to establish which of potential candidates for the position of head of state would have the best shot in the elections.
According to the party’s statute, the candidate for president is voted by the party’s congress.
