Car owners who paid the increased tax will get rebates, the government said.
“The government decided the triple pollution tax on cars will be enforced as of December 15, thus annulling the last week ordinance. Tax exemptions for Euro 4 cars with less than 2,000 cmc engines, as well as for Euro 4 utility vehicles registered for the first time in Romania or in EU states will also be enforced starting with December 15,” government spokeswoman Camelia Spataru said.
The Romanian authorities last week said will triple the pollution tax for used cars to boost new car sales and aid the local auto industry.
The government decree, which became effective on Monday, triggered a series of protests from both buyers and used-cars dealerships.
Romania’s car market fell roughly 30% in October.
