Boc gave the example of an Audi A6: the tax on such an automobile will be hiked to 936 from 468 lei (EUR1=RON4.3688).
According to the government emergency ordinance amending the Fiscal Code, the tax on motor bicycles, scooters, motorcycles and cars with engines up to 1,600 cc has been hiked to RON8/200 cc from RON7/200 cc, and the tax on cars with engines between 1,601 cc and 2,000 cc has been increased to RON18/200 cc from RON15/200 cc.
The tax on engines between 2,001 cc and 2,600 cc has been hiked to RON72/200 cc from RON30/200 cc. The tax on engines between 2,601 cc and 3,000 cc has been increased significantly, to RON144/200 cc from RON60/200 cc. Cars with engines larger than 3,000 cc will now incur a RON290/200 cc tax, up from RON120/200 cc previously.
The tax on buses, coaches and minibuses has been raised to RON24/200 cc from RON20/200 cc.
The tax on vehicles with mechanical traction below the maximum authorized weight of 12 tons has been hiked to RON30/200 cc from RON25/200 cc, while registered tractors will incur a RON18/200 cc tax, up from RON15/200 cc.
People have until December 31, 2010 to pay the taxes and individuals who pay the taxes in full until September 30, 2010 will benefit from a reduction set through decisions of local councils adopted for 2010.
Finance Minister Sebastian Vladescu said the increased taxes on cars will be applied as of the second quarter of the year, starting with July 1, 2010.
