Romanian Govt Might Make New Changes To Car Tax

The Romanian government is considering a hike in the pollution tax for very old cars, with non-euro, Euro 1 and Euro 2 engines, and a change in the sum paid for new cars, through a system in which CO2 emissions will represent the main calculation criterion.

Romanian Govt Might Make New Changes To Car Tax

"There might be some adjustments in the grid for tax reduction with respect for the age of the car, from 0-95%, a level included in the draft document already found under debate, to 0-90% or even below," government sources told MEDIAFAX.

The tax will be calculated mainly with respect for carbon dioxide emissions, which are the most noxious, and, probably, nitrogen emissions, and not considering the other noxious emissions, which are less harmful and can be eliminated through the car’s catalyst.

The new changes will be presented to the European Commission in a letter, before the Government approves them, the quoted sources said.

According to the format proposed by the Government in January, the car pollution tax would have been calculated through a formula that included the degree of pollution of the engine (Euro norms), the cylinder capacity of the engine and the age of the car. The sum resulting for each category would be adjusted depending on the age of the car.

Romanian prime minister Calin Tariceanu announced that the draft ordinance on the car pollution tax would be amended through the introduction of new rules that would correlate the CO2 emission levels with the tax, starting with July and with European Commission advice.

He said that the new changes appeared as a possibility after talks held with environmental NGO representatives.
