Romania, Moldova Union Depends On Both Nations’ Citizens – Romanian Pres

Romanian president Traian Basescu said Wednesday in Prague, in a meeting with representatives of the Romanian community, that, from his perspective, Romania’s union with the Moldova, should it ever come into question, could only be achieved at the desire of citizens in both countries.

Answering a question, Basescu said that Romania has not planned to introduce elements that would stimulate the breach of state borders, as established after the Second World War.

"However, we have the chance of the European Union. This is why we are making efforts to move Moldova, from a European perspective, into the Western Balkan nations group," he added.

He explained that, once acceded to the EU, the rights of Romanian and Moldovan citizens will converge. "We are in the same family", Basescu said.

"If we ever speak of union – and I am not one to utter this word – I can tell you that from my perspective this is only possible when the citizens of both countries will it,” he concluded.
