Romanian Govt Representatives To Continue Talks With Unionists In October

Prime Minister Emil Boc told unionists that the country's two salary laws, namely the wage law for 2011 and the frame law on wages in the public sector, will be finished soon, adding the Labor Ministry and social partners are analyzing various work scenarios.

According to the press release, the prime minister highlighted that scenarios analyzed so far take into account the fact that the number of public sector employees must be reduced to 1.29 million next year and the salary fund cannot exceed 39 billion lei (EUR1=RON4.2648), in order to observe a 4.4% budget deficit agreed with the International Monetary Fund.

National Union Bloc leader Dumitru Costin said talks with the Government on the wage laws and the minimum wage will continue. He also said the prime minister agreed to meet with unionists in agriculture and energy sectors next week.

Around 5,000 unionists gathered outside the Government building Tuesday in protest to austerity measures including public sector layoffs and wage cuts. Similar protests also took place last week, most recently Friday, when thousands of police workers and prison guards demonstrated outside the Government.
