Romanian Govt Seeks Parliament Conf Vote On Austerity Plan Monday

Prime Minister Emil Boc attended a meeting of the Parliament's standing offices Wednesday to discuss a calendar for the adoption of the Government's austerity measures.

Geoana also said amendments to the two bills for which the Government seeks a confidence vote are expected until Friday evening and the Government is to decide until Monday at noon which amendments it includes and which it rejects.

Geoana, of the opposition Social Democratic Party, added a no-confidence motion could be submitted to Parliament Tuesday and lawmakers would put it to the vote within three days.

Romania, which has been hit by the deepest recession in at least 20 years, has pledged to bring the budget deficit to 6.8% of the gross domestic product under the terms of a EUR20 billion IMF-led rescue loan agreed last year. The Government this weekend adopted two draft laws that make up its austerity measures, which include reducing pensions by 15% and state employees' salaries by 25%.
