The new car tax formula will enter into force as of July 1, 2008. It will be set with respect for the technical data of each particular car, based on carbon dioxide and noxious gas emissions.
“The difference in money that results from the tax paid by drivers between January 1, 2007 and June 30, 2008 and the current formula of the car tax will be refunded based on the procedures stipulated in the methodological norms on applying the current emergency ordinance,” reads the draft emergency ordinance on the car tax approved Monday by the Executive.
The refunding procedures will be set by the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Economy and Finance, 90 days after the emergency ordinance is published in the Official Gazette.
The new car tax formula stipulates that the CO2 emissions level will be considered for both Euro 3 and Euro 4 cars. It also stipulates that car owners will pay a higher tax for new cars, which are seen to be used for a longer period of time than an older car.
