Romania’s PM Blasts President Over Uninominal Voting System

Romania’s Prime Minister Calin Tariceanu said President Traian Basescu refused to promulgate the law on the uninominal voting system, for which the government assumed responsibility in Parliament, as he only wants things to work out the way he likes, and stressed that the system he proposed is "an attempt to reinstate dictatorship in Romania."

Tariceanu pointed out that the president is under the impression that he represents people’s will, when, in fact, he does not have the right to speak on Romanians’ behalf.
The Premier said that the draft law proposed by the government is based on systems that were applied in many EU countries and whose procedures ensure balance between the number of votes and that of mandates, "while the system proposed by the President was so dangerously elaborated that it may result in rigged elections."
