The new hydropower plant will function without a barrier lake, unlike the country’s other such units that had been built before 1989.
The new complex will be made up of two plants, situated in the same area, each of them with three units.
Thus, the Dumitra plant will have three groups of 24 megawatts-hour each and a production capacity of 38 GWh per year. The second plant will be located in Bumbesti Jiu area and will produce around 177 Gwh per year, Wednesday said Hidroelectrica’s general manager Mihai David.
The execution contract for the two hydropower plants had been assigned to Romelectro Bucuresti and Hidroconstructia construction companies.
"This is the first investment started after 1990, and the project is very important because we will collect the waters of one of the most important rivers in Romania. (…) It is not based on a barrier lake," David said.
As of 2010, Hidroelectrica will upgrade the hydropower plant in Bicaz, the unit in Islaz, and the third plant on the Danube River.
The company is owned by the Economy Ministry and is the cheapest electricity producer in Romania.
