So far, Ford only assembled cars in its Craiova plant. About 400 units of the Transit Connect have been assembled in Romania so far, with parts made at Ford’s factory in Turkey.

„With the opening of our painting department, we are happy to announce the launch of the production process at the factory in Craiova,” Crisan said.

Ford Europe chief John Fleming met Monday in Bucharest with Romania’s Prime Minister Emil Boc and President Traian Basescu.

Ford Motor Co. bought a 72.4% stake in Romania’s Automobile Craiova in September 2007 for EUR57 million. Ford has since hiked its stake to 97.07% and received green light to delist the company from the stock exchange and buy out the other shareholders.

Also this year, Ford Romania is set to start production of the small class B-Max.
