Romanian Importers To Pay 0.5% Copyright When Bringing In iPods, MP3 Players

The ORDA decision includes the protocol on the list of supports and devices for which compensation is paid for the private copy of the works reproduced from recordings, as well as the amount of these remunerations.

The protocol is meant to update the list of devices and supports that can perform audiovisual and sound recording. The protocol refers to importers as well as producers of such devices and supports.

Thus, the list was added with devices such as: mobile phones with memory higher than 64 MB, television sets and digital record players with an HDD or built-in storage, Blu Ray Recorder and HD DVD Recorder devices, memory sticks, MP3 players, MP4 players, iPod media player. The support category was added with memory cards, Blu Ray disks and HD DVD disks.

For these devices and supports, importers and producers need to pay copyright worth 3% (for supports) and 0.5% (for devices) of the total customs value of the supports and devices that allow the reproduction of audiovisual and sound works, in analog and digital system, in the month for which the sum is due (the calculation base does not include VAT, customs taxes, excises).

At the same time, local producers of such devices and supports need to pay the same percentages from the total value of monthly bills issued for the equipment mentioned, as copyrights.
