Romanian Incumbent President Traian Basescu Accused Of Hitting A Child In ‘04

Romanian daily Gardianul posted online a video, filmed in 2004 during the electoral campaign for the presidential elections, showing incumbent president Basescu at a rally. Later in the clip, Basescu seems to strike a child across the face with the back of his fist, for undistinguishable reasons.

Basescu denied the allegations, saying the clip is modified and he has never, in his entire life, struck a child.

Furthermore, one eyewitness, brought forth by Basescu's campaign staff, said the event never happened, there was no contact and, thus, the child was never hit.

Contacted by local reporters from the county where the rally took place in 2004, the child, now 15, said he does not want any part of this campaign and is unwilling to discuss any details of what happened in 2004. "If this was such a big deal, someone should have said something back then," the boy told local paper Observatorul Prahovean.
