Romanian Intelligence Service Has No Data On Al Qaeda Boot Camps In Romania

“The Romanian Intelligence Service, or SRI, does not hold nor has it received any signals verifying the existence of al-Qaeda training camps in Romania,” but, since 2002, "it has actively identified and monitored the connections in Romania of a cross-border crime ring, with relevance on a terrorist level." In this context, there were measures taken for the neutralization of activities with national security risk potential on the members of the network present on Romanian soil," said a press release issued by SRI.

According to the service, the intelligence gathered between 2003 and 2004, and a proposition from SRI, led Romanian authorities to dub undesirable several foreign citizens within the group. In addition, within international cooperation actions, SRI informed several partnering services, including the Italian partner, "on the elements appearing in Italian media as well."

"Given the fact that Romania is on the eastern border of the European Union and NATO, our Service carefully monitors and analyzes the implications of the international terrorist phenomenon in Romania in cooperation with the institutions responsible on an internal level and the partnering services on an external level," said the SRI press release.

Il Secolo XIX also said that during a wide investigation unfolded by the special operations division (ROS) within the Genoa police department (Liguria, northwest), investigators intercepted a conversation between two terrorism suspects – Tunisians Jameleddine Ben Mohamed Ben Moussa and Bechir Kaouana – who mention the existence of " al-Qaeda training camps in Romania," where jihad warrior wannabes learn how to build and use explosive devices.
