Romanian Intelligence Services SRI, SIE Are Politically Unbiased – President

The head of state attended the activity report presented by the SRI, which celebrates 20 years of activity. In the press statements made after the meeting, Basescu said the neutrality of the SRI in times of political unrest shows him that the SRI has matured.
"The fact that, in these times of political instability, the service has remained neutral, politically uninvolved, clear from the information leaked into media, unbiased and equidistant in the political disputes, shows me that the service has matured," Basescu said.
"I am convinced that nobody can politically influence the functioning of the SRI, or that of the Foreign Intelligence Service (SIE). I am not speaking of the department services, just the two coordinated by the CSAT," Basescu said.
The head of state added the SRI is a service that has seen a powerful transformation and will continue to undergo similar transformations from now on, as the SRI is a new service with new people and new objectives, which has become respected as a partner to its counterparts in NATO and the European Union.
According to Basescu, the SRI has undergone a process of accelerated modernization in the past five years, with the help of former SRI director Radu Timofte and current SRI director George Maior.
