Romanian Interior Min Demands Crackdown On Street Violence

"The fight against street violence remains a priority, since this type of crime is an important element striking at the security of the citizens and public order. (...) The heightening of broad daylight violence, the constant return to such practices with worrisome persistence, is unacceptable," David said.

 

David also showed concern regarding the passiveness of police officers in such situations, stating that the heads of county structures “with problems” should be replaced.

"We can no longer tolerate the lack of reaction and intervention fm the police towards managing such acts of violence. I fail to understand what those police chiefs are doing in the cities where gang related incidents have become a constant occurrence. I don’t know how you see things, inspector general, but I feel that those chiefs should be replaced, to make room for better ones,” David stated.

 

At the same time, David drew attention on the fact that schoolyard violence tends to shift towards the classrooms, asking police officers present to find solutions against this phenomenon.

 

"It is not at random that I associate drug abuse with violence in schools and I ask you to approach the matter from this perspective, because the greatest risk is that high-schools or schoolyards might turn into drug dealing areas," David said.
