Thousands of police workers, gendarmes and prison guards protested at the government's headquarters Friday over cut wages and then left on an unauthorized march to the presidential palace, demanding to speak to President Traian Basescu.

Protesters threw candles, bottles and their uniform hats at the presidential palace, which the president said undermined state authority and state institutions.

Sources said earlier Monday the position of interior minister might be filled by Defense Minister Gabriel Oprea, who has previously served as interior minister.
