Romanian Interior Ministry Received Over 1,300 Notices Of Attempted Election Fraud

In a statement issued to MEDIAFAX, the Interior Ministry’s press office said that over 50 of the more than 1,300 notices have been confirmed and measures have been taken.

The statement also said that around 1,000 Interior Ministry employees have checked 3,300 passenger vehicles and the identity of over 6,900 people. As a result, 35 cases are under investigation.

Several MEDIAFAX reporters have been following the electoral process in voting stations in the surrounding areas of Bucharest, remarking that buses carrying voters go from station to station without being questioned by the authorities.

Romanian interior minister Dan Nica said Sunday that there have been attempts to defraud the EP elections, with voters receiving money and food, and 35 criminal records have been opened.

The minister warned that harsh measures will be taken against anyone attempting to defraud the elections. He also said that 400 checkpoints have been set up by the Interior Ministry all over the country, to check vehicles which may carry people who vote more than once.

Dozens of notices on such crimes have come from Bucharest and surrounding areas. Observers in voting stations said their main suspects are people who come to vote in large numbers by bus or minibus.
