Speaking at the opening of the university year in northeastern city of Iasi, Adomnitei said that he feels he has to tell things as they are, even if that makes him unpopular.

“I know that my statements will hardly make me popular and that they do not favor me politically,” Adomnitei said.

“We (the Education Ministry – e.n.) need 1 billion lei (EUR1=RON3.7348) by the end of the year to cover this salary hike, and another EUR1.2 billion in the next year. In 2009, we will not be able to repair and build anything. We will not be able even to continue the project to equip schools with minibuses,” Adomnitei mentioned.

“I do not know who will be minister of education by the end of next year, but I hope it won’t be me,” Adomnitei continued.

Romania’s Chamber of Deputies on Tuesday approved a 50% pay hike for staff in the educational system.

Adomnitei, who attended the vote, was in favor of the act.
