Leader of the ethnic Hungarian party UDMR, Social Democratic Party (PSD) and Greater Romania Party (PRM) responded Tuesday to the invitation sent by President Traian Basescu to parliament parties for consultations on the results of the uninominal vote referendum.
Romanian Left, Far-Right Parties Decline President’s Invitation, Hungarians Accept Out Of Politeness
UDMR leader Marko Bela told a news conference that his party will attend consultations, but out of politeness only. Marko criticized the president for insisting so much on this issue.
"We will attend the meeting because we are polite, but we will state our opinion about this proposed voting system," Marko said.
Leftist opposition social democrats declined the president’s invitation. PSD leader Mircea Geoana said that “as long as the president’s office is the campaign headquarters for democrats and liberal democrats, there is no room for consensus”.
Geoana added the president and democrats made a “hypocritical” gesture in not reminding that the uninominal voting system for which a referendum was called had been promoted by social-democrats.
Corneliu Vadim Tudor, head of the far-right PRM, said Tuesday his party also declines the president’s invitation.
"We have no reason to consult with a president who is illegitimate, an impostor and a mobster. (...) If I’m to go, I’ll only go to throw him out the window," said Vadim Tudor, who is also the Romanian Senate’s deputy chairman.
Basescu invited all parliament parties and the parliament group representing ethnic minorities to attend consultations Thursday regarding the results of the referendum held Sunday.
