Olteanu, who is the leader of the liberal organization of Bucharest 's sector 5, was admitted to Bucharest 's University Emergency Hospital after he was hit in the head with a bat.
University Emergency Hospital spokesman Bogdan Popescu said he suffered severe head injuries, adding that his condition is stable.
The police suspect that the attack may have been an act of revenge against Olteanu, who brought to court the nanny who mistreated his two year-old girl, Eva.
In June, a Bucharest Court ordered nanny Lovinica Dinu, indicted on April 12, 2010 for hitting the child, to pay a criminal fine in the amount of 1,000 lei (EUR1=RON4.2636), as well as RON1,000 in moral damages, and the sentence, which was appealed with the Bucharest Court, became definitive Wednesday.
The case of the two-year-old Eva received wide media coverage and alerted authorities last summer, when her mother, Irina Olteanu, revealed video footage capturing the nanny's violent behavior towards the girl. Olteanu decided to install security cameras after noticing the girl would start to cry when she saw the nanny. The authorities accepted the unauthorized, amateur, footage as evidence.
