Romanian Mayor Charged With Bribery, Forgery, Placed Under Preventive Arrest

Solomon was brought before the Arges Court Wednesday, where magistrates were to decide if a preventive arrest warrant is necessary in the case involving charges of forgery and soliciting bribe.

Solomon, who is the leader of the country's ruling Democratic Liberal Party (PDL) local branch, was heard and detained Tuesday by anticorruption prosecutors for 24 hours on charges of bribe taking, intellectual forgery and use of forgery.

Prosecutors have searched Solomon's office, his apartment in Craiova and his villa located in Leamna.

People close to the investigation said Solomon is suspected of having taken EUR50,000 bribe from FC Arges owner Cornel Penescu to release a construction permit allowing Penescu to have a PIC store built in Craiova.

During searches, prosecutors seized a series of documents regarding the land plot where PIC store in Craiova is built, as well as papers involving its construction.

Solomon said he had to release the respective construction permit, or the representatives of the respective company would have filed criminal complaint against him. Solomon stressed his actions were perfectly legal.
