Romanian MEP Asks EC To Sack Gray Over ‘Unprofessional’ Statements

In the beginning of the letter addressed to European Commission president José Manuel Durão Barroso, Severin reminds of what Gray told a press conference on September 4, namely that the decision made by the Romanian Parliament on the procedure appointing chief prosecutors is contrary to the position the European Commission.

“On September 4th, the spokesman of the European Commission Mark Gray, answering to a question from journalists during his press conference, stated that the decision of the Romanian Parliament concerning the system of appointment of the Romanian prosecutors goes against the position of the European Commission, expressed in its country report on the progress of justice and the fight against corruption in Romania,” Severin said in his letter.

According to Severin, Gray said the Romanian authorities are aware that they should not change the current appointing procedure, suggesting that such a change might affect Romania and its membership in the European Union.

"Such a statement is unprofessional, and also extremely incorrect and fundamentally wrong,” Severin wrote in his letter to Barroso.
Severin said Gray should be dismissed if his statements were not made on behalf of the European Commission.

EC spokesman Johannes Laitenberger told MEDIAFAX later on Tuesday that representatives of the European Commission address all public statements on behalf of the Community’s executive, therefore any discontent with the position expressed by the EC should be addressed to the Commission directly.

Laitenberger said Gray’s position reflected EC’s stance on the matter.

He mentioned that as long as the European Commission imposes certain objectives to Romania, it is normal for the Commission to express its position on these matters.
