“The Government can think of ways to stimulate new car sales and slow down the imports of used cars during the time when the tax for new cars is suspended,” Fourmont said.

He said Dacia is not considering at present the possibility to ask the state for financial aid, like other carmakers in Europe and the United States of America.

Fourmont said measures taken by the Government to stimulate new car sales are more useful.

“For the time being, we stress that it’s important to have the new cars’ market favored and the second hand car imports halted. The main measures would be the starting of the car park renewal as of January 1, 2009, stricter check-ups for imported used cars, as well as some verifications run by the Financial Guard, to identify the savage sales of second hand cars,” Fourmont said.

The Government approved Wednesday an Emergency Ordinance suspending the pollution tax as of December 1, 2008 until end of December 2009, for Euro 4 new cars with maximum 2,000 cubic centimeters engines, which were first registered in Romania and the European Union.

The Government estimates a drop of 40% to 50% in the revenues from the car pollution tax, following the measure.
