Mailat admitted to having stolen the woman’s purse, which contained 13 euros, but did not admit to killing her.

Mailat said that at no time during his arrest was he ill-treated by the Italian police.

He said that his passport is currently withheld by the penitentiary’s management and that he is to be held in an isolation cell for the first 30 days, according to the penitentiary’s rules.

Mailat, whose alleged crime sparked a diplomatic scandal between Romania and Italy, asked Romanian authorities to be allowed to serve his jail term in Romania, as he fears Italian prisoners.

“He is afraid to come in contact with Italian prisoners and wishes to be closer to his family,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
