New car registrations dropped by 8.6% in Romania last year, to 285,504 units, while used car registrations grew by 151.4%, to a record level of 310,885 cars.
Romanian New Car Registrations Drop By 8.6% In ‘08, Used Cars Thrive
In 2007 there were significantly more new cars registered (312,533 units) then there were used ones (123,622 cars), but last year used car registrations took the lead leaving new car registrations 25,000 units behind, according to data from the license and car registration division within the Ministry of Interior.
In December 2008, new car registrations dropped by 21.9%, from 24,148 cars in the last month of 2007 to 18,854 in December 2008.
On the other hand, used car registrations grew almost six times in December 2008, (471%) compared to the same month of the year before, from 9,573 units to 54,712 cars.
This data indicates that, in December, people registered almost three times more used cars than they did new ones.
In addition, the total number of car registrations grew last year by 36.7% compared to 2007, from 436,155 units to 596,389 cars, an advanced fueled on used cars alone, since the new car market registered decreases.
