Last Friday, a court overruled prosecutors’ request to extend Cirstea’s preventive arrest warrant and the decision was appealed with the Bucharest Court, whose ruling in this case is final.

People close to the matter told MEDIAFAX that Cirstea’s arrest warrant expires Thursday afternoon.

The August 16 fire in the Giulesti maternity ward left three newborn babies dead and eight others severely injured. Three more babies died in the following period. All five surviving babies have been released from hospital.

After the accident, prosecutors started criminal investigations and charged Cirstea with manslaughter, as she was responsible with monitoring the babies in the hospital’s intensive care ward. She was arrested on August 24. Vasile Dima, the head of the maternity’s technical department, neonatologist Adrian Ioan Toma and Bogdan Marinescu, former manager of the maternity, are also under criminal investigation.
