The illegal payments were made through the Istanbul offices of subsidiary Mercedes-Benz Turk and amount to at least EUR3.88 million, according to a settlement between the German group and US prosecutors.
Documents found by Daimler in 2006 in a MB Turk vault show that around EUR6.05 million had been paid to government clients outside Turkey, located in North Korea, Latvia, Bulgaria, Libya, Romania, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Yemen and other states. These transactions generated EUR95 million in revenue.
At least EUR3.88 million in cash and gifts were paid to government officials or third parties, with the understanding that they should be passed on to officials able to aid Daimler in selling cars to government clients.
The German carmaker will pay USD185 million to settle its charges.
