Orban said the future presidential candidate of the Liberal Party needs to have the party’s support and be able beat current president Traian Basescu.
Asked whether he could run for president, Orban said it is too early to say.
"It’s premature to discuss this. Anyway, it’s obvious we’ll nominate our presidential candidate based on the party leaders’ will and thorough polls to make sure we have a candidate that has a real shot at beating Basescu," Orban said.
He added a candidate should be nominated as soon as possible, to have enough time to tour the country and talk to people.
Party spokesman Bogdan Olteanu said Friday the Liberal Party’s priority is designating the best possible presidential candidate, one who has a real shot at winning the election.
