Romanian Pensioners To Picket Govt On March 26 Over Pension Law

Romanian Pensioners Federation leader Preda Nedelcu said the federation sued the Government and the case will be tried the end of September this year. Pensioners argue that, by the time the case is judged, the draft pension law of which they disapprove will already have been enacted by the Parliament.
Nedelcu also said pensioners do not agree with paying for medical services and urged the health minister to meet them for talks, adding they have received no answer so far.
Pensioners said they also summoned president Traian Basescu for talks on the pension issue, but their call was not given an answer.
Romanian pensioners affiliated to several union federations Wednesday submitted to the Senate an amendment to the draft pension law, urging an increase of the pension point to 45% of the average gross salary, and threatened to protest if the bill becomes law in its current format.
Over 200 pensioners met Wednesday at the Senate for talks on the draft pension law, displeased with the value of the pension point, an indicator used by authorities to calculate pensions, and the increase of the retirement age. They said about half a million retirees will stage protests if the Parliament enacts the draft pension law unamended, adding they will also notify international organizations for having their rights breached.
