Romanian Prime Minister Viorica Dancila accused the European Union of using double standards when it criticizes the country on issues of corruption and cracking down on protests, in an interview offered for Politico.eu.

The chief of cabinet compared the situation caused by the August 10, 2018 rally in Romania to the recent Yellow Vests protests in France.
“Romania is not allowed what other countries are allowed to do (…) I saw what happened with the Yellow Jackets in France. No one had any reaction. It’s a double standard. I didn’t see anyone come to the European Parliament and say ‘We want a resolution on France, ’” the Romanian PM told politico.eu.
The prime minister also criticized statements made by the leader of the ALDE political group in the European Parliament, Guy Verhofstadt, who compared the situation of the rule of law in Romania to that of Hungary and Poland, member states targeted by EU treaty procedures due to accusations of meddling in judicial affairs.
“If he understands that he needs to lead this election campaign to the detriment of Romania and accuse a state like Romania, I don’t think it’s a constructive way to work,” said Dancila.
The Romanian PM also stated that it is unfair for Romania and Bulgaria to be the only member-states which are monitored on anti-corruption efforts, through the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism.
