Romanian PM, Labor Min Accused Of Discriminating Dads In Pension Reform

The Alliance Against Discrimination of All Dads, or TATA, said in its claim that Prime Minister Emil Boc and Labor Minister Mihai Seitan's initiative to allow mothers to retire a couple of years earlier is deeply discriminatory and suggests fathers are second-rate parents.

The association added mothers and fathers have the same rights and obligations.

After talks with unions mid-March, Boc said the Government is open to reducing the retirement age by one year for mothers of two, and by two years for women with more than two children.

The labor minister and unions discussed the possibility to reduce retirement age to 63 from 65, as stated in the pension law which is pending debates and approval in Parliament.

Bogdan Draghici, head of the TATA association, said in a press release Thursday the association denounces the fact that the Government, which should observe equal rights and the country's Constitution, is working on discriminatory policies.

"Prime Minister Boc and Minister Seitan seem to be oblivious to the fact that Romania currently has over 30,000 fathers on paternity leave," the association said, adding most fathers in Romania equally share all parental rights and obligations with the mothers of their children and do not deserve such offensive and discriminatory treatment from the Government.

The association called on the antidiscrimination authority to solve its complaint as soon as possible to prevent the Government from going through with its policy.
