„The president now has a major constitutional role. I firmly call on the president that at least now, as his term in office is coming to an end, to rise above political interests and help unlock this situation and quickly appoint a government that has parliamentary support,” Geoana said.

Geoana also called for a government formed by independent professionals, to run the country until the presidential election scheduled for November 22.

Romanian Prime Minister Emil Boc’s minority government lost a confidence vote in Parliament Tuesday, as lawmakers voted 254 to 176 to overthrow the Cabinet, a first in Romania’s twenty years of post-communist history.

Basescu called parliamentary parties for consultations this evening.
