Romanian PM Says Wage Raise In Education Sys Is Populist, Irresponsible
Romanian deputies’ votes for a 50% wage raise for staff in the education system is a mere “populist” measure before the upcoming general elections, the country’s Prime Minister Calin Tariceanu said Wednesday at the opening ceremony of the 2008-2009 university year organized by the Technical University of Civil Engineering in Bucharest.

Tariceanu stressed this measure is not sustainable on lack of funds, adding the teaching staff did not even ask for a wage raise.
Tariceanu also said that anybody in their right mind and fully aware of how the economy works quickly realizes this wage raise is not sustainable and pointed out that wage raises must be in line with economic growth indicators.
The Romanian Chamber of Deputies Tuesday approved unanimously Ordinance 15/2008 amended by the leftist opposition Social Democratic Party stipulating a 50% wage raise for staff in the education system.
The education minister, liberal Cristian Adomnitei, present at the Chamber’s plenary meeting, also voted in favor of the wage raise.
The Chamber of Deputies has the final say on this normative act.
