Nearly One Third Of Romanians Lack Running Water, Sewage

Romania’s environment minister Attila Korodi said Wednesday 32% of Romanians lack running water and sewage services and Romania needs to invest in waste management, water and waste water administration to catch up with other European countries.

"By 2018 we need to invest EUR9.5 billion in waste management, water and waste water administration. Waste water is not purified enough, and half of the country’s waters are in this situation. Even if we have 1,310 water recycling units, 63.4% of them are not working properly,” Korodi said.
 
According to Korodi, 52% of Romanians have running water and sewage, while 32% lack these fundamental services, compared with a state like Hungary where 90% of the population has running water and 62% has sewage.
 
Development minister Laszlo Borbely said he would ask for the monitoring of how local authorities use EU funds and will request the employment of specialists for regional development agencies to draw up projects.
