“Fishing should not continue in the Danube Delta as strictly an economic activity, and should exist only as touristic activity, to avoid destroying the natural balance and disturb the habitat in the Delta,” Tariceanu said.

For many years, poaching has developed on a large scale in the Danube Delta, and measures fighting it have not been efficient, Tariceanu added.

He also spotted a social problem arising from the fact that the main activity of most people living in the area is fishing.

“We have a social problem. For many years, we have illegal fishing developing on full scale, and measures to prevent it have been inefficient,” Tariceanu said.

He said there is a master plan allocating EUR130 million for the entire Delta, of which EUR80 million is assigned to create activities developing infrastructure in the area, and alternative activities such as constructions and reed processing.
