Romanian Poet Adrian Paunescu Buried With Military Honors Sunday

Over one thousand people gathered Sunday morning at Bucharest's Atheneum, where the poet's body was laid out in state. They lit candles and threw white flowers on his coffin.

Paunescu's funeral ceremony on Sunday, at Bellu cemetery, was attended by cultural and political figures, as well as by ordinary people.

President Traian Basescu said he admired Paunescu's poetry, but not his left-wing politics, and thanked the poet for helping a generation of young artists.

Paunescu was best known for his poetry about love and death, and even his love for football. His last poem was written on October 31 from his hospital bed.

Paunescu died Friday morning, at the age of 67, from multiple organ failure. Paunescu is survived by his wife and three children.
