Romanian Pol Parties, Govt Will Not Enforce Current Law On Teachers’ Wage Hike - Fin Min
Romanian political parties do not want to take responsibility for the enforcement of the law hiking teachers’ wages by 50%, and no government will enforce it in its current form, economy and finance minister Varujan Vosganian said Sunday.

"The law, in the form adopted by the Parliament, will not be enforced by anyone in Romania. Any government that will come will find a subterfuge to postpone its enforcement, to change it,” Vosganian told a seminar in Sinaia, central Romania.
He said after elections all parties will change their speeches and will discuss on the effects of such a measure that would practically “lead to a disaster”.
In his discussions with the unionists, he asked them to present their own scenarios on the impact of the wage hikes they demanded, Vosganian said. No unionist federation came up with such projections, although they have the expertise and the capacity to make such assessments, he added.
“The dialogue with the unionists must rely on scenarios on the evolution of the country’s society. They (the unionists - e.n.) replied we have no scenarios to discuss as the Parliament adopted the law on wages in the education system without any scenario. I told them that if the incomes of the Romanian people diminish, no lawmaker is going to take responsibility for that, but I will be judged and I do not want to make short-term compromises,” Vosganian said.
Romanian President Traian Basescu promulgated on October 24 the law granting a 50% wage hike to staff in the education system as of October 1. The Government decided on October 28 by Emergency Ordinance to prorogate the enforcement of this law until April 1, 2009.
The economy minister announced he will meet unionists for discussions again on Monday.
