Romanian Police Detain Group Of ATM Thieves

A criminal group specializing in theft from ATMs was caught Thursday night in the eastern Romanian county of Bacau, in an action coordinated by organized crime prosecutors with the help of the Romanian intelligence service SRI.

One of the suspects tried to flee but police shot him in the shoulder.

Organized crime prosecutor Mircea Andres said five people were detained in the action and police found they had crowbars and tools they used to cut into ATMs.

Police started investigations to prosecute 11 people, who will be taken to Timisoara, western Romania, for hearings, the prosecutor said.

He added the respective group was under prosecutors’ eye since last summer.

In January 2008- January 2009, forty ATMs across the country were robbed.
