Prosecutors with the National Anticorruption Department branch in the eastern county of Galati are conducting criminal investigations on Or Meir for influence peddling and accessory to influence buying, both repeated.
Prosecutors found that in April 2010 defendant Or Meir helped another person claim EUR115,000 and received EUR20,000 for that person from an approver. This influence peddler was to convince several judges to repeal sentences of custody and prosecution at large, and issue suspended sentences for certain individuals on trial before the Criminal Law Section of the Supreme Court, the Anticorruption Department said in a statement.
Or Meir was caught rapid Thursday, right after receiving EUR20,000 from the approver. A fictitious loan contract was drawn up between Meir and the approver, in order to conceal the graft.
Meir was arrested on Thursday, while on Friday The Galati Tribunal sentenced him to 29 days of preventive arrest. The influence peddler in this case is still under criminal investigation.
Romanian politician Nati Meir, Or Meir's father, was sentenced to four years in jail for deception this February.
