On Saturday, the council said it would ask the Parliamentary Assembly of the European Council, or APCE, to assign an official who might evaluate the situation in the county and Magyars’ wish for autonomy.

The president replied following CNS’s announcement that “these gentlemen (members of the Szeckler council) seem to be unaware of the fact that Romania is now a European country that has observed all the standards imposed by the Union.”

“ I do not think an European institution will ever take into account this request,” the president added.

The Council also asks the APCE to consider applying the stipulations of decision no. 508/1996 regarding the convention on national minorities’ rights, if Romania fails to honor its engagements towards the Hungarian population.

CNS decided that the memorandum be forwarded to APCE members by the Permanent Commission within the Council and also by president Basescu.

The memorandum presents the Szeckler county, its history, population, the steps towards obtaining autonomy and the CNS activity.
