Romanian Pres Declares Stance On Romanian Immigrant Issue
Basescu announced that he asked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to notify the European Commission regarding the new Italian legislation immigrants, as well the need for a European level project on the social inclusion of Romani people. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs was asked to open new Consulates in Italy.
The president added that “in the hours to come” the Romanian Government would make public the action plan regarding the situation in Italy.
He added that, as head of state he condemns any violation of the law and any act of violence performed by Romanian citizens, in the country and abroad. „Any crime needs to be punished. Such gestures are not characteristic of Romanians,” said Basescu.
He mentioned that in the same quality, as head of state, he also condemns any act of violence against Romanian citizens and any speech inciting to the violation of civil rights against Romanian citizens, regardless of their location on EU soil.
Basescu said that the Italian economy had “enormous gain” from the arrival of Romanian citizens, in the same manner in which the Romanian economy had to gain from Italian investments.
